Core Theme & Key Insights:
This documentary will feature an elk population that lives through the rigors of seasons, predation and thrives in an area with liberal hunting regulations accessible to anyone.
- The footage is captured from a region not managed for ideal age structures or sex ratios. By taking a novel approach to showcase elk behavior, this provides a realistic representation of how elk behave in heavily hunted public lands.
- The documentary will be structured into chapters covering various topics. Each chapter will be supported by scientific research and footage of wild, undisturbed elk, in their natural habitat.
- Some topics I plan to cover:
- The impact of predators and hunting pressure on elk behavior
- Defensive strategies elk use against predators
- How a bull behaves when tending a cow in estrus
- What are pheromones and their effect on bulls?
- The seasonal progression of bull behavior—from antler growth, through the rut, to late-season patterns
- How an elk’s nose functions and its significance for hunters
- The nutritional requirements of bulls and cows and how this knowledge aids in locating elk
With nearly a decade’s worth of accumulated footage, this documentary will provide an in-depth look at elk behavior and biological factors that directly apply to hunting.
- Unlike many elk videos available online, this project will focus on elk behaviors hunters are most likely to encounter in pressured, highly hunted areas.
A major aspect of the documentary explores how elk adapt to both human hunting pressure and natural predators, including wolves, cougars, grizzly bears, black bears, and coyotes.
- The elk featured in this project represent the wary, survival-driven behaviors expected in areas where these predators coexist with hunting activity.
- Through years of trail camera research, I have captured extensive footage showcasing how elk react to the presence of wolves.
- The purpose is not to debate wolf management but to provide hunters with a deeper understanding of how elk respond to predation—helping them refine their approach in the field.
Another key component of this documentary will examine how elk utilize timbered habitat.
- This innovative approach will provide hunters with valuable insights into the behavior of heavily pressured, backcountry elk in their natural setting.
